Ascape Adventures

Two years of camping in our Ascape prepared us for more serious camping in Pard. Below is a list of places we camped and brief notes of the trips.

03/02-04/2018   Davidson River site 40  Interior site (inside the campground loop road).  Partially vegetated.  No hook-ups but water nearby.  In winter, nearby bathhouse was closed but more distant one open.  Hiked on Art Loeb trail.

03/25-27/18   Cataloochee site 23  Interior site.  Trees but exposed.  No hook-ups but water nearby.  Creeks through campground. Hiked Rough Fork trail 2 miles round trip to Steve Woody house.  Hiked Caldwell Fork trail about 2.5 miles r.t..  Boogerman trail too wet.  Watched elk herd. Explored historic buildings.

05/20-22/18  Doll Mountain COE campground on Carters Lake in NW Georgia.  Electric/water hook-ups. Kayak on lake.  Osprey nest on small island.  Nice visitor center.

05/22-23/18  Amicalola Falls St. Park, GA at campsite #7.  Hookups. So-so campground with steep access. Extended waterfalls.  Steep hikes.  Nice lodge.  Good for one visit.

Cancel June reservations for Mt. Pisgah after drive through campground.  For vans/trailers, only a short narrow driveway adjacent to road.  No privacy except at some picnic tables/tent sites a few steps into vegetation.

07/08-10/18  New River St. Park 221 Access campsite #4.  Electric at site.  Water nearby. No sites have much privacy.  Rent canoe from Riverside Canoe; shuttle upstream; take-out Riverside Canoe.  Next: paddle to Mouth of Wilson.

07/29-31/18  Van Hook Glade near Highlands, site #13.  No hook-ups. Small wooded campground. Visit Highlands. Hike at Cliffside Lake rec area.

08/10-12/18  Sugar Hollow campground, Bristol Va.  Electric at trailer sites.  Some water sources can be connected to individual nearby campsites, but not available to most.  Wooded. Two bathhouses – back one not very clean.  Tim’s birthday.  Theatre, Farm Tour, Harvest Table.

08/12-14/18  Grayson Highlands, site #25, electric/water.  Campsite is a driveway adjacent to campground road.  No privacy.  Wooded on passenger side.  Some nice first-come sites. Great hiking. Wet firewood for sale – very smoky. Nice park despite so-so campground. Long drive to reach it. See nearby Mt. Rogers campgrounds.

10/24-28/18  Woodring on Carters Lake, GA.  Site #30.  Rainy weather.  Good hiking.  Drive to Atlanta to see Wonder FTB.

01/05-07/2019  Table Rock St. Park in SC.  Hike around lake, inc. historic lodge.  Next: hike along river near small museum.

02/24-26/19  Devil’s Fork St. Park on Lake Jocassee in SC.  Hookups.  Kayaked to waterfalls.

05/05-07/19  Devil’s Fork SP.  Kayak to dam.

05/26-27/19  Hurricane campground in Mt. Rogers Nat’l. Rec Area.  Very nice small campground with rushing creek and good hiking. Spur trail to Appalachian Trail.

08/09-13/19  Sugar Hollow campground in Bristol, VA for two nights followed by Grindstone in Mt. Rogers Nat’l. Rec Area for Tim’s birthday.  Sugar Hollow site #12 and Grindstone site #44.  Went to La Cage Aux Folles play at Barters and Harvest Table for two meals.  Hiked on Appalachian Trail near Grindstone, one of our favorite campgrounds.  Tim starts whittling.

10/05-08/19  Devil’s Fork SP site #50.  Good site slightly elevated, relatively private, near trail to tent sites. Seasonal water view.  Lake Jocassee pontoon boat tour led by naturalist Patrick McMillan.  Drive to Bad Creek catchment area and Upper Whitewater Falls.

11/02-04/19  Little Oak campground in Cherokee National Forest east of Bristol TN.    Most campsites are large with water frontage or water views.  Hiked on Little Oak trail and Little Oak Mountain trail (about 1.5 mile loop with ~200′ ? elevation gain).  Open 4/1 thru 11/15.  No hookups.
