03 July 2020 Update regarding our camping experiences during the covid pandemic. We’re having no problem staying safe. Campground reservations are made and paid in advance. We choose campgrounds with large sites and we don’t use the bathhouse. If there is an entry gate, we’re prepared with a whiteboard showing our name, site number, and dates of stay. This is displayed to the host through the driver’s window which is lowered enough for sound to pass but still provides a shield between driver and host. If the host wants to give us a pass we hold out a shallow cardboard box to receive it. At one campground, there was a sign to enter the manager’s office. Wearing a mask, I knocked and he came to the door without a mask and invited me in. I said that I wanted to remain outside, where we did finalize the check-in. We use an alcohol spray on any hookups at the campsite. For hiking, we use wide forest service type roads or campground roads that allow for 6′ of distance for encounters with other hikers. If it’s apparent that nearby trails are getting little use and it’s possible to move out of the way of oncoming hikers, we’ll hike those trails. The most risk we probably encounter is at gas stations, where we do use a mask and disposable gloves, and toll booths, where we use an EZ-Pass or exact change.
